“My face is very sensitive, you cannot use a brush to apply makeup. I will turn red and look bad on camera,” began the heavily Greek accented Arianna Huffington as she sat in my chair at FOX News Channel in Washington, DC. I paused, and thought, how do you put on makeup without brushes? I studied the strong and beautiful Arianna for a moment, and then said, “It’ll be okay. I clean my brushes fastidiously. I don’t think you will react.” As I put the clean blush brush on her face, and began to apply a warm blush, we both watched while her skin turned a brilliant shade of red. I was stunned.
Lesson learned: always listen to Arianna Huffington. Thankfully, the redness dissipated quickly and all was well. That being said, the largest portion of my job as a professional makeup artist and stylist, is paying attention and listening. What products I use, how they react under hot lights, and finding the right foundation, lipstick, and skin care goes neck in neck with listening intently to my client. In Arianna’s case, as with many women, there just isn’t one foundation shade that works, she needs to mix them in order to effectively match her skin, (applied with a sponge, not a brush.) Like a mad scientist, I nearly always mix different colors in order to match someone’s skin and find the perfect shade. Enter Lip Bar Cosmetics.
Debbie LaBrant-Hartung founded Lip Bar cosmetics and High Heal Skin care because she realized that customers become frustrated by all the mixing they have to do to get what they want, so she created a system where she could blend foundations and lipsticks. Recently, Debbie mailed me a sampling of her foundation, skin care, lipsticks, lip-glosses, and more to try out with my print and television clients. I’m a rather challenging test subject, to say the least. Actually, I’m a pain. I can tell you, in great detail, what I like and don’t like about at least 50 cosmetic lines, and I’m very fussy as to what I allow in my makeup kit. Having been in the business for over 20 years, and made up such luminaries as Hillary Clinton, Barbara Bush, Al Gore, and John McCain, I cater to a difficult and high maintenance crowd. Given that truth, I was pleasantly surprised at what I found with Lip Bar.
In an out-of character move on my part, I tried the Liquid Silk enriched foundation on an on-air personality. I never do this in case the talent has an allergic reaction or the product doesn’t read well on film. The talent in question said, “What’s this?” and picked up the foundation and applied it before I had a chance to intervene. This particular Lip Bar foundation has medium coverage, an easy glide on application, and is infused with an exclusive medical grade microlyzed collagen. I’m not a fan of medium or full coverage foundations on camera, as I never want to see the product on the face, however; on camera, it looked beautiful. The talent loved the product and confiscated it from me to use from then on.
The lipsticks are creamy and long lasting, and their collagen packed lip balm will smooth fine lines around the mouth and plump the lips. It is not to be missed. When you make your own lipstick, you get to choose flavor and essence along with color and texture. With the collagen infused foundations you have the option to include sunscreen, level of coverage, and several corrective additives. The foundations are mineral based, have 11% pigment, and can be formulated into everything from a tinted moisturizer to a full coverage foundation. Lip Bar also offers ready to wear products like roll-up liners, brow pencils, concealers, and more.
High Healed Skincare is also incredibly lovely and worth the money. I am an aesthetician as well as a makeup artist, so the condition of a person’s skin is incredibly important in my work. Dry or dehydrated skin photographs terribly no matter what makeup you put on it. Debbie infuses her skin care with collagen as well, so you get the anti-aging and healing benefits. In fact, Debbie uses the same base balm as is used to heal burn victims! Burns, rashes, irritation, and even Rosacea sufferers will notice dramatic results. My favorite is the Double Collagen Salve Eye Balm. My wrinkles are noticeably diminished and my skin feels incredible. (This from someone who has tried, oh, I don’t know, 30 different eye creams.) The night cream is equally affective, but you need to practice using it as it’s thick and a little goes a long way. Warm it on your fingertips before applying.
LipBar Cosmetics and High Heal Skincare are only available via wholesale distribution and retail sales at 1-800-285-5941, or through their website at http://www.lipbar.com. I recommend this product to anyone!
