What Are the Top 5 Style Tips for Older Women?
Just because you are getting older, doesn’t mean that you have to be any less fabulous! How can you enhance your beauty as you age while your body is, well, less than perfect? Owning your imperfections and dressing as the powerful and confident woman you are is the key to style. Here are my top five style tips for dressing and designing your best look.
Buy Clothes That Fit
This may sound silly, but it’s a real issue! Many times I find women buy baggy or lose fitting clothing because they feel it hides those pesky extra pounds. In truth, wearing clothes that fit is a better way to show your shape and hide the weight. The baggier the clothes, the bigger you look. What I struggle with, is feeling comfortable in clothing that enhances my bust and hips, when I really want to do the opposite. In fact, when I help some women with their wardrobe there is a section in their closet called, “when I lose the weight I will wear this…” And another section of, “when I gain ten pounds I wear this . . .” My advice is to be ruthless and only have clothes in your closet that fit you right now. You will be amazed at how much better you feel when the ‘wanna be smaller’ and the ‘just in case I’m bigger’ clothes are no longer staring at you as you dress every morning!
Wear Color!
The two most common shades people buy in apparel are white and black. Is this because we lack creativity? Or maybe because we are used to not standing out, and would rather have a basic uniform that requires little thought and planning? The other challenge with buying color is that you need to buy quality, as a poor quality red shirt will not stay red with frequent washings. It takes greater effort to maintain good quality clothing with strong dyes than it does an off white shirt from Target. My solution to this is to shop consignment stores. I like designer wear, as it is better quality, yet I am too stingy to pay the high prices. When I show up to a booking with a high-level person and I’m wearing my beautiful fuchsia top and perfectly fitted suit, I not only feel confident, but I am taken seriously, trusted, and given all the leverage I need to do an outstanding job. As much as I wish appearances didn’t count, they do. Buy color, ladies.
Throw Away Maxi Dresses and Wear Skirts to Your Knees!
I love maxi dresses. At 5’10”, I have spent many days throughout the summer in a bright, flowing, maxi dress and sandals, and felt amazing. The trouble with maxi dresses as I age, though, is that they tend to make me look bigger because I am more filled out. If you aren’t tall, then a maxi dress will make you look shorter and, sorry about this, but it will add pounds to your frame. A way around this is to buy skirts that go to your knees, and fit your hips. You can buy skirts in wonderful stretch fabrics that hug your shape, don’t add pounds, and are still comfortable to wear. The same goes with sweaters; don’t have shirts or sweaters that end at your hips, that only draws attention to that part of your body. Have them end at your waist instead, and you will automatically have a curvy feminine shape that looks put together and successful.
Accessories
Each season, I buy a new necklace. It doesn’t have to cost a lot, it just needs to be a statement piece that pops whatever outfit I am into. As I said above, I love shopping consignment stores, and often find unusual and fun necklaces that make a dull outfit come alive, and make me look like a genius. Isn’t that what we all want? Buy statement necklaces that bring out your best outfits.
Jeans!
Recently I helped a woman; I’ll call her Jane, who had been wearing the same jeans for over ten years! They didn’t look good on her, but they were comfortable and required no effort. After much persuasion, I talked her into buying a new pair of fitted low-rise skinny jeans from the Gap. As she stood in front of the mirror, I could see all the lights going on in her head. She not only looked sexy, but she felt ten years younger! Having an amazing pair of jeans changes how you walk, feel, and flirt with everyone around you. Go for it. Show off your booty and don your heels in your rock-star jeans. Who says that only millennial’s can be hot?
I hope this has been helpful and please feel free to comment and ask questions. I love hearing form you!
